November 2006 Paedophile surrenders to police One of the five missing child sex offenders identified on a new website last week has reported to police.

Gordon Stewart handed himself in at Grampian Police HQ in Aberdeenshire on Friday evening, local police said.

He was arrested and is being held in custody.

Stewart had been on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years since being convicted of child sex crimes in Scotland in 2005.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre created the website so that missing child sex offenders could be tracked.

The website initially published the details of five missing offenders.

It gives their names, ages, photograph and where they have gone missing from, but not their convictions.

The website went live at midnight on Friday and Stewart’s image has now been removed from the site.

Immediate impact Crimestoppers created the CEOP Centre’s site after the success of its own Most Wanted website.

It also said the new site had already received more than eight million hits.

Mick Laurie, the charity’s chief executive, said: “We are pleased that the campaign has already had an impact with the site receiving so many hits and the surrounding publicity resulting in one wanted individual contacting the police themselves.

“It is not surprising that there is so much interest in this campaign from the public but it is vital that they do not approach any of these men.” The men featured on the website have already served punishment but are on the sex offenders’ register and went missing, after failing to comply with legal restrictions on their movements – a condition of the register.

Breaching these “notification requirements” is an arrestable offence that carries a punishment of up to five years in prison.
