GLYN THOMAS OF WIRRAL SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR BRUTAL SEXUAL ABUSE

In October 2017, Glyn Thomas, a 68-year-old from Wirral, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for his heinous crimes involving two young girls. The court heard that Thomas, who lived on Bromsgrove Road in Greasby, subjected one girl to repeated rapes and infamously attempted to rent her out to friends for sex, among other vile acts. He also sexually abused a second girl, falsely claiming he was checking her breasts for cancer.

Judge Alan Conrad, QC, emphasized the severity of Thomas’s crimes, stating that although the abuse of the second girl was deeply disturbing, the offenses against the first girl were even more horrific. The judge remarked, “Your conduct as far as she was concerned was truly horrifying. You used your forceful and domineering personality to get what you wanted.”

He further explained that Thomas used objects to inflict pain on the first girl for his perverted pleasure, and the suggestion that he considered renting her out for sexual activity with friends was the final straw, leaving her seriously damaged. Both victims, now adults, only revealed their experiences to the police in late 2015, not knowing of each other's abuse.

The judge praised the victims for their courage in coming forward, noting that Thomas showed no remorse and even attempted to portray himself as a victim. Thomas was convicted on multiple counts: 11 counts of rape, six of indecent assault, five of sexual assault, and two of causing a child to engage in sexual activity against the first girl. He was also found guilty of two indecent assaults and one sexual assault involving the second woman.

During the trial—after a jury deliberated for seven hours and returned a verdict by a ten to two majority—prosecutor David Potter described how the first victim ended the abuse because Thomas tried to pass her to his friends. She reported feeling petrified and manipulated into performing sexual acts, with her finally saying “no” before Thomas physically assaulted her, punching her at the back of the head.

The second victim came forward in December 2015, revealing her own abuse. Thomas dismissed both women as “compulsive liars” and denied any alone time with them.

In a statement, the first victim shared how the trauma affected her education and daily life, suffering from anxiety and fear of encountering Thomas again, stating, “I never go out on my own, I’m too scared in case I see him. If I did I would not stop running.”

The court imposed an additional 12-month licence, ordered Thomas to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, and issued an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Because Thomas did not qualify for legal aid, he paid for his own defense and was also ordered to pay £2,000 towards prosecution costs within 14 days.
