PLYMOUTH PE TEACHER SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF ABUSE
A retired physical education teacher with three decades of experience has been revealed as a secret sex offender who had been abusing students since his time at a teacher training college in Plymouth. He served as an educator at two secondary schools in Norfolk before relocating to Australia, but was extradited back to England for trial at Norwich Crown Court.
On the first day of proceedings, the 57-year-old confessed to seven counts of indecent assault against girls under the age of 16 and was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.
Judge Anthony Bate, who handed down the five-year sentence, stated that the charges involved six girls aged between 13 and 16 during the periods of abuse, which occurred from 1979 to 1996.
The offenses ranged from kissing to much more serious acts, with all but one victim being former pupils.
Jones’s offending began when he was 19 years old at teacher training college.
The judge described the misconduct as a severe breach of trust, noting that the victims were students at two Norfolk high schools.
It was revealed that Jones kept his abusive secrets for many years while maintaining an outward appearance of respectability.
His current residence was listed as Upper Coomeera on the Gold Coast near Brisbane, Australia.
He appeared in court dressed in a dark suit, white shirt, and purple tie, with no visible reaction as he was taken into custody.
Some of the victims attended the hearing in person, while others viewed via videolink.
The judge emphasized the profound effect on those impacted, highlighting one victim’s testimony that she continued to refer to him as Mr.
Jones, remembering how he made her feel special and cared for her—an experience starkly different from his hidden abuse.
His passport was submitted to the court as well.
