2011; STUDLEY MAN JAILED FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING AND ASSAULT ON ESTRANGED WIFE
AN irate Studley man twice rammed his estranged partner’s car before dragging her out and attacking her.Coventry Crown Court heard Glen Newsome was on bail at the time for an earlier assault on Christina Clifford.
Newsome, aged 35, of St Martin’s Avenue, was jailed for a total of 22 months after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous driving and common assault.
Prosecutor John Butterfield said the couple had been in a relationship for 12-14 years and had three children.
But in the months leading up to the end of last year, things deteriorated, and in December Newsome was arrested for assaulting Miss Clifford.
In March, while on bail, he had contact with one of his children and was upset when he saw Miss Clifford had a new car on her drive.
She believed he was angry because he thought she had a new relationship, but he said it was because they had financial problems and she had spent money on the second-hand car.
On March 3, Miss Clifford was in her car when she stopped at traffic lights and saw Newsome in his works Vauxhall Combi van on the opposite side of the junction.
When the lights changed Newsome turned to follow her.
She became worried and headed towards her mother’s home in Toms Town Lane, Studley.
He pursued her, dangerously overtaking a car, and when behind her, rammed into the rear of her vehicle.
Her car and the van were damaged, but he continued to pursue her to her mother’s.
As she came to a halt, he rammed her again with enough force that the air bag inflated in her car, which was pushed into the garden wall of her mother’s house, causing it to collapse.
Newsome went over to the car, dragged Miss Clifford out, and punched her several times as she screamed to stop.
A neighbor intervened, and Newsome made off before finally surrendering to police on March 29, claiming the collisions were accidental.
Mr Butterfield added that Newsome had convictions in the 90s for offences of aggravated vehicle taking, robbery, and wounding, and was jailed for 12 weeks for the December assault.
Jamie Strong, his lawyer, admitted difficulties over finances, and Newsome said she had built debts on a credit card and a joint account, yet continued spending.
He acknowledged the collisions were deliberate.
The judge banned him from driving for three years and labeled his behavior as unacceptable and bullying.
