GIFFORD JONES PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL ABUSE IN IVER HEATH AND SINDLESHAM

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Iver Heath and Sindlesham, Gifford Hugh Jones, a 79-year-old former houseparent, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of historic sexual offences committed against young boys during the late 1970s and 1980s. The crimes took place at Dromenagh School, a now-closed institution located on Seven Hills Road, which served as a special needs school for boys up to the age of 12 before its closure in 1996.

Jones, who resided on Mole Road in Sindlesham at the time of his arrest, was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault and five counts of gross indecency involving four boys aged between six and nine years old. These offences occurred while he was employed as a houseparent at the school, a role that placed him in a position of trust and authority over vulnerable children. The court heard that Jones’s abuse followed a disturbing pattern of grooming, where he would initially offer comfort to the young boys, many of whom had recently arrived at the school, before luring them into private spaces such as the staff room or his personal quarters to carry out sexual acts.

During the sentencing at Aylesbury Crown Court, the impact on the victims was poignantly highlighted. One victim, now aged 43, delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement, stating, “The abuse will never leave me. I’ve got to live with that for the rest of my life. I find it difficult.” Another victim, who was only seven at the time of the abuse, described the school environment as something “you would not wish on your own worst enemy,” emphasizing the profound trauma inflicted.

Legal representatives and investigators detailed the manipulative tactics employed by Jones, including grooming techniques that made the victims feel special and cared for, only to be betrayed by his actions. The victims have suffered long-term psychological consequences, including depression, mental health struggles, and substance abuse. Two of the men have experienced suicidal thoughts, with one having attempted to take his own life, as revealed during the court proceedings.

Despite Jones’s previous good character references and his involvement in charity work, including associations with the Freemasons, Judge Sheridan dismissed these factors as irrelevant to the gravity of his crimes. Jones had initially admitted guilt in September, accepting all charges, but later attempted to retract his pleas, claiming health issues and blaming his legal counsel. The court condemned this attempt to withdraw his confession, citing it as an additional source of trauma for the victims.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Sheridan was unequivocal, stating, “You may be 79 years old. All that shows is you’ve got away with this for so long. You were charged in a position of total trust. You were a sneaking paedophile abuser, going in under the guise of you going to comfort them at night.”

Jones was sentenced to a total of eight years and six months in prison for each of the 14 charges, to run concurrently. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. At the time of sentencing, he was living at a Masonic care home near Wokingham, where he will serve his sentence and face ongoing restrictions under the sex offenders’ register.

Detective Constable Jo Dolder, from the Child Abuse Investigation Unit at Aylesbury police station, expressed her support for the victims, stating, “It has taken great courage for them to come forward to bring him to justice after so much time has passed. His admission of guilt will, I hope, make it feel worthwhile for them, knowing their abuser will finally face the consequences of his actions.”

Jones’s case underscores the importance of justice for victims of historic abuse and highlights the long-lasting scars inflicted by those entrusted with their care, especially in institutions like Dromenagh School, which once served vulnerable children in the Iver Heath and Sindlesham areas.
