PONTYPOOL THUG WITH HISTORY OF VIOLENCE STRANGLED GIRL
A THUG with a history of violence has been jailed after he punched and strangled a girl in a “terrifying” attack.
Geraint Gillard, 35, from Pontypool was “intoxicated” when he assaulted the child earlier this autumn, Jac Brown, prosecuting, told Cardiff Crown Court.
The defendant admitted intentional strangulation, battery and criminal damage when he later kicked a door off its hinges.
His victim cannot be named for legal reasons due to her age.
The defendant has previous convictions for assault by beating.
Gillard’s barrister Sophie Keegan said that her client’s best mitigation was his early guilty pleas, stating that her client’s behavior was alarming but he is sorry.
She noted he has a long-standing substance abuse problem and was diagnosed with ADHD in 2020.
Gillard has been remanded in custody since the offences and has been working as a cleaner on his wing, making use of his time in jail.
Judge Paul Hobson told Gillard that his actions—punching his victim before choking her—were painful and abhorrent, causing the girl to be upset and shocked.
The damage to a door was caused when he kicked it off its hinges.
The judge highlighted Gillard’s history of violence, but acknowledged his guilty pleas as mitigation, and sentenced him to two years imprisonment, with the time already served counted.
He was also made subject to a five-year restraining order and ordered to pay a victim surcharge following his release.
