GEORGE COCKERILL'S DECADES OF ABUSE IN HULL: SHOCKING REVELATIONS OF RAPE AND MOLESTATION
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Hull, a man named George Cockerill, aged 78, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses spanning over four decades. The allegations reveal a pattern of abuse directed at young girls who were followers of the Jehovah’s Witness faith, with Cockerill exploiting their religious devotion to carry out his depraved acts.
According to court records, Cockerill’s crimes began when one of his victims was just ten years old.
Over the years, he continued his assault, targeting girls aged 12 and 15, respectively.
The abuse was so manipulative that he even coerced one young girl into praying after an attack, attempting to intertwine his criminal acts with her religious beliefs.
Another girl, overwhelmed with fear and confusion, sought help from church elders, hoping they would intervene.
However, her pleas went unanswered, and feeling betrayed by the faith she trusted, she eventually left the church in disgust.
The case came to light after one of the victims confided in her doctor, which prompted police investigations.
The authorities uncovered multiple victims and evidence linking Cockerill to 32 criminal charges, including 19 counts of rape and four counts of sexual activity with a minor.
His arrest and subsequent trial revealed the extent of his misconduct, which had remained hidden for many years.
During the sentencing at Hull Crown Court, Judge Roger Thorn described Cockerill as “the most terrible hypocrite,” condemning his actions and the betrayal of trust involved.
The judge emphasized that Cockerill’s crimes were not only sexually depraved but also deeply hypocritical, as he had presented himself as a law-abiding member of the community while secretly abusing vulnerable girls under the guise of religious authority.
Judge Thorn sentenced Cockerill to an indefinite imprisonment for public protection, with a minimum term of six years.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
The court heard that Cockerill’s criminal activities might have involved more victims, with allegations from two additional women who had not yet been formally charged.
Police believe there could be further victims, and they continue to investigate the case.
One victim’s statement, read aloud in court, poignantly expressed the lasting impact of Cockerill’s abuse, stating, “He took my childhood away.” Prosecutor David Dixon highlighted the manipulative tactics used by Cockerill, including forcing one girl to pray after the assault and attempting to silence victims who sought help from church authorities.
Police officials from Humberside Police’s public protection unit praised the bravery of the victims who came forward, acknowledging the courage it took to relive such traumatic experiences.
Detective Constable Sam Crompton expressed gratitude for their cooperation, which was instrumental in bringing Cockerill to justice.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witnesses issued a statement condemning Cockerill’s actions, affirming that he was disfellowshipped from the faith once the misconduct was discovered.
The organization reiterated its stance against any form of abuse and emphasized that such behavior is not tolerated within their community.
