GEORGE HARRIES FROM WHADDON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CONVICTION NEAR ROYSTON

In February 2004, a serious case involving Geoffrey Harries, a resident of Whaddon near Royston, came to light that drew significant public and legal attention. Harries, a 57-year-old business consultant and father of three, was accused of possessing and downloading child pornography, a crime that has profound implications for the victims and their families.

Harries' case was particularly complex because during his trial, he attempted to shift blame onto his teenage children, claiming they were responsible for the indecent images found on his devices. However, it was ultimately revealed that Harries himself had viewed the illicit material. The court was informed that Harries had confessed to a probation officer after his conviction that he had indeed viewed the child pornography, acknowledging his own involvement in the offense.

The allegations surfaced after Harries' wife, Barbara, discovered the inappropriate material on the family computer. This discovery prompted her to report the matter to the police, leading to a detailed investigation and subsequent trial. The case attracted considerable media attention, partly due to the nature of the charges and the impact on Harries' family life. In a heartfelt letter presented to Judge Jonathan Haworth, Mrs. Harries described the emotional toll the ordeal had taken on their family, emphasizing the distress and upheaval caused by the accusations.

Support for Harries was also evident in letters from his vicar, employer, and his general practitioner, Dr. Christopher Polge, who provided evidence during the trial. Despite the gravity of the charges, the court noted that the majority of the images Harries viewed were of a lower severity, with 613 out of 629 images classified at level one, the least serious category. Thirteen images fell into level two, and three into level three, with none reaching the highest levels of indecency, which are levels four or five.

During sentencing, Judge Haworth acknowledged the serious nature of the offenses but also considered the circumstances of the case. He stated, “Anyone who indulges in this behaviour is ignoring in their own mind the abuse and coercion that is applied to young children in order to produce the photos and it is that that is at the heart of these offences.” Ultimately, the judge decided against imposing a custodial sentence, opting instead for a community rehabilitation order. Harries was ordered to attend a sex offender programme and pay costs amounting to £3,200. The court's decision reflected a nuanced approach, balancing the severity of the crime with the circumstances presented during the trial.
