GEMMA SLINGER OF RETFORD SENTENCED FOR PIG NEGLECT IN NORTH ROAD, TORWORTH
Gemma Ruth Slinger, born December 1973 and residing at 3 Westside Cottages, North Road, Torworth, Retford DN22 8NT, was convicted in 2022 of neglecting pigs on her smallholding. Slinger, who is a company director and owner of the Cuckoo Café in East Retford, admitted to multiple offences related to animal welfare and animal by-products.Officers from the local authority's trading standards division inspected her property and discovered carcasses of goats and pigs that had rotted and decomposed to the bone. The same officers observed that the pigs on her land were severely malnourished, desperately rooting around for food, with no feed or water available for the animals.
Additionally, chickens were found roaming freely across the grounds, which posed a risk of catching bird flu. This was concerning because national measures require poultry to be kept housed, yet the birds were exposed to potential disease vectors.
In court, Slinger was fined £350 and received a ban preventing her from owning farmed livestock for ten years. The case was reported by Lincolnshire Live and West Bridgford Wire.
