CONSETT MAN GARY THOMPSON SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL FAMILY MURDER
Gary Thompson, a 25-year-old resident of Consett, was convicted of murder after attacking Gillian Raine, the mother of his former girlfriend.Court records indicated that Thompson had thoughts of killing his ex-partner and had considered taking his own life to be with her.
However, his rage turned him toward her mother instead.
The incident happened in Dipton, where Thompson lay in wait outside Gillian Raine’s home.
As she stepped out, he confronted her with a lump hammer and a kitchen knife.
Witness testimony from neighbour Vicky Hopper described seeing him positioned behind Mrs.
Raine during her brief stop.
He raised the hammer and hit her on the head with a force that produced a loud impact.
She fell face-first, bleeding from her nose or mouth, and Thompson kicked her before stabbing her multiple times in the face, neck, and chest, breaking the weapon in the process.
During the assault, he told neighbour Vicky Hopper, “She deserves it,” and afterward, he called the police, confessed to the crime, and waited for authorities to arrive.
Psychologists assessed that Thompson had learning difficulties, emotional and social challenges, low IQ, and struggled with alcohol consumption, along with experiencing suicidal thoughts after a breakup with Pamela, who has Asperger’s syndrome.
He initially denied murdering Mrs.
Raine but later admitted to manslaughter; on the day of his trial, he changed his plea to guilty.
He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years, less time served, without showing any emotion in court.
The judge noted the brutality of the murder and its profound effects on the family and the local community, highlighting the severity of Thompson’s actions.
