GARY MAYLOR FROM PENWORTHAM SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND VIOLENCE AGAINST YOUNG GIRL
In a case that has spanned nearly two decades, Gary Maylor, a resident of Gaskell Road in Lower Penwortham near Preston, has been sentenced to a total of three years and nine months in prison following his conviction on multiple serious charges involving a young girl. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the offenses committed by Maylor, which have had long-lasting effects on the victim.According to the prosecution, Richard Hunt, Maylor was found guilty by a jury at Preston Crown Court of four counts of indecent assault. These assaults involved inappropriate touching of the girl when she was only eight or nine years old. The court was also informed that Maylor had previously been convicted, at an earlier trial, of an assault causing actual bodily harm, during which he struck his victim so forcefully that she experienced temporary hearing loss. The jury was told that this violent act was severe enough to cause physical injury and emotional trauma.
Throughout the trial, Maylor maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and asserting that the offenses did not occur. His defense lawyer, Zillah Williams, highlighted that Maylor had no prior criminal record and emphasized his good character, suggesting that imprisonment would be particularly difficult for him given his clean history. Williams also pointed out that her client continued to deny the charges despite the jury’s verdict.
Judge Pamela Badley addressed Maylor directly during sentencing, expressing her concern over the gravity of the crimes and the profound impact they had on the young victim. She noted that the victim had been deeply affected by the memories of what had happened to her, which contributed to her earlier suicide attempt—an incident that was fortunately unsuccessful. The judge underscored the seriousness of the offenses, which involved not only sexual misconduct but also violent assault.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Badley sentenced Maylor to three years and nine months for the sexual assault charges. Additionally, she imposed a six-month sentence to run concurrently for the assault causing actual bodily harm. As part of his punishment, Maylor will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and is permanently disqualified from working with children, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the need to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
