GARY EWING SENTENCED IN HELLESDON FOR ABUSE AGAINST CHILD VICTIMS IN NORWICH
In March 2021, a courageous woman who endured years of sexual abuse publicly appealed to others who have suffered similar trauma, urging them to never lose hope. Her heartfelt message came in the wake of the sentencing of Gary Ewing, a 57-year-old man from Hellesdon, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious offenses committed nearly three decades ago in the Norwich area.Gary Ewing's criminal actions spanned from 1992 to 1997, during which he preyed on two young victims, both under the age of 13. The crimes included one count of rape, two counts of sexual activity with a girl under 13, and six counts of indecency with a child. The severity and calculated nature of his offenses were highlighted during the trial, which took place at Norwich Crown Court. Judge Stephen Holt described Ewing's conduct as both “calculated” and “planned,” emphasizing that his actions had long-lasting effects on the victims, impacting their lives well into adulthood.
Following Ewing's conviction, one of the victims, now an adult, chose to speak out publicly. She expressed her relief and gratitude that justice had finally been served, and she used her voice to encourage others who might be suffering in silence. Her message was clear: “To anybody that this has happened to, please never give up. It has taken me years to come to terms with what happened to me as a child, and in the end, I just couldn’t take the pain anymore. For years, nobody listened to what I had to say, but eventually, someone did. They believed me, and what I said was the truth and did happen. Please don’t be scared to speak up. Whoever hurt you took away things from you that will never be replaced. Please don’t let them take anything else from you.”
Her words serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of speaking out and seeking justice, no matter how long it takes. Detective Constable Holly Beevis praised both victims for their bravery in coming forward and giving evidence in court, which ultimately led to Ewing’s conviction. She stated, “It does show that justice can prevail despite several years passing and should assure victims that they will be listened to if they come forward. The police will take their allegations seriously and investigate them fully.”
Gary Ewing, who was formerly residing on Hercules Road in Hellesdon, was found guilty after a trial that uncovered his long history of abuse. His actions left a lasting impact on the victims, with the court acknowledging the profound effect his crimes had on their lives. The sentencing underscores the seriousness of his offenses and the importance of holding offenders accountable, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
