CHILD RAPIST GROOMED MORE THAN A DOZEN GIRLS ONLINE THEN BLACKMAILED THEM
Gareth Russell, a 22-year-old man, was found responsible for a pattern of extensive grooming and sexual offenses against more than a dozen young girls, many of whom were frightened and vulnerable. He used messaging applications such as Snapchat and TikTok, operating under fake identities to target minors online.
Russell employed threats, including promises to share explicit images, to coerce his victims.
His criminal conduct extended into physical assaults, including the rape of a 13-year-old girl in woodland near his home in Fort William.
Despite being under four bail restrictions meant to prevent him from contacting children, Russell continued his offending behavior.
He faced a trial at Glasgow’s High Court, where he admitted to online sex offending but denied any in-person abuse.
He claimed he was too scared to leave his house because of threats from his local community.
The jury found him guilty of 40 crimes committed between 2021 and 2023, involving 15 identified victims and further allegations of communication with unspecified underage girls.
Currently incarcerated, Russell is awaiting sentencing in the new year.
His online interactions reached multiple platforms, including Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and text messaging.
He also initially reached out to a young woman through Only Fans.
At the time of arrest, he was logged into Snapchat under a false alias.
During the trial, Russell expressed remorse, describing himself as “ashamed” of his admitted conduct.
His lawyer, Gary Allan, described the acts as “undeniably disgusting” and “truly despicable.” Evidence revealed that Russell’s reputation in his hometown was so notorious that his family had to set up CCTV outside their house to prevent targeting.
He denied committing any physical sexual abuse, insisting he did not assault a 14-year-old girl he had pursued online, who he falsely claimed was “Freddie” and with whom he said he could “make it work,” despite her being underage.
Russell also admitted to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on a bus and denied an incident in which he allegedly preyed on another girl in a car, asserting that his mother was present during that event.
His most serious crime involved raping a 13-year-old girl late at night in September 2023 in the woods, threatening to distribute her explicit images online and forcing her to meet him.
In cross-examination, prosecutor Nicola Gilchrist pressed him to admit guilt on several charges, highlighting that he was “bang to rights.” Russell acknowledged that he was a sex offender but insisted his offending was online rather than face-to-face.
The prosecution stated that his criminal activity had escalated over time and accused him of exploiting a frightened young girl.
She argued that he targeted many girls over two years in a systematic grooming campaign, all while under multiple bail orders.
The prosecutor condemned Russell's behavior as “creepy,” “weird,” and “rapist,” emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
Russell contended he was not guilty of physical sexual abuse and maintained his innocence on other allegations.
His sentencing has been postponed pending reports, with the outcome to be decided in the upcoming months.
