HENGOED MAN GARETH HARDING SENTENCED FOR REPEATED SEXUAL ATTACKS IN SOUTH WALES
In a harrowing case that unfolded in Newport Crown Court, Gareth Harding, a 33-year-old man from Hengoed near Caerphilly, South Wales, was sentenced to more than six years in prison for a series of disturbing sexual assaults against a teenage girl.The case drew significant attention after the victim’s courageous act of recording Harding’s attack on her mobile phone played a crucial role in securing his conviction.
Over a period of five months, Harding subjected the young girl to multiple unwanted sexual advances, leaving her feeling terrified and helpless.
The victim, who initially chose to remain silent out of fear and doubt about whether her claims would be believed, eventually found the strength to seek justice.
Her breakthrough came when she handed her mobile phone, which contained recordings of Harding’s assault, to her father.
Recognizing the gravity of the evidence, her father promptly contacted the police, leading to Harding’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
During the court proceedings, the recordings were played in full, revealing Harding’s persistent attempts to coerce the teenager into sexual activity.
In one recorded exchange, Harding is heard offering her money, saying, “What if I give you a tenner?” as he continues to pester her.
The court also heard Harding chuckling as the girl begins to sob, followed by the sounds of a struggle and her screams for help.
The victim can be heard pleading with Harding to stop, repeatedly saying, “Stop” and “I can’t.” Harding’s response was dismissive, telling her, “Yes you can.
It’s easy.” Harding’s actions left the girl feeling scared and distressed, and his behavior was described as a pattern of harassment and assault.
When questioned by police, Harding initially dismissed the recording as a “joke,” attempting to downplay the severity of his actions.
However, the evidence was overwhelming, and Harding pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempted rape, assault, two counts of sexual assault, and inappropriate touching.
In light of these crimes, the court sentenced Harding to a total of six years and eight months behind bars.
