GARETH BALDWIN SENTENCED IN GLOUCESTER FOR SEXUALOFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL
In August 2010, Gareth Baldwin, a 27-year-old father of three from Norbury Avenue, Matson, Gloucester, was sentenced to over three years in prison after being convicted of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, who subsequently became pregnant. Although Baldwin initially denied having sex with the girl, DNA evidence confirmed he was the father of her baby, Gloucester Crown Court heard.Judge Euan Ambrose noted that Baldwin appeared to be sexually attracted to the girl and stated, "it was clear he was sexually attracted to her." The judge described Baldwin's actions, which led to the girl becoming an early mother, as having "grossly disrupted" her life.
Baldwin pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16. Prosecutor Ian Fenny explained that the offences came to light after the girl’s mother discovered explicit text messages on her mobile phone. Baldwin was confronted with these messages and initially denied the allegations, but Fenny highlighted that his denials were "ultimately futile," given that the girl was pregnant and Baldwin was identified as the father.
During police interviews, it was revealed that Baldwin had commented on her "precocious sexual attractiveness" and had expressed his own sexual desires, Fenny added.
Defence lawyer Jon Holmes acknowledged Baldwin’s acceptance of full responsibility, emphasizing that as the adult, Baldwin should have distanced himself from the situation and was not shifting blame onto the victim. Holmes also noted that Baldwin faced a custodial sentence which would result in a loss of contact with his young children and his home.
As part of his sentence, Baldwin was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order lasting five years, which prohibited him from contacting the girl, engaging in unsupervised contact with children under 16 unless they were family members, and from taking photographs of any child under 18 without permission. Additionally, Baldwin was required to register as a sex offender.
