GAIL AND JAMES HARRISON FROM BALINGRY, FIFE, CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG ARCHIE

Gail Riley Harrison (née Middleton), born around 1969, and James A.

Harrison, born on October 29, 1961, both residents of 7 Kirktoun Street, Ballingry, Fife, faced serious allegations regarding their treatment of their pet dog.

The two-year-old Great Dane-cross, named Archie, was subjected to neglect that resulted in significant health deterioration, which ultimately led to their conviction.

According to court proceedings, both Gail and James Harrison admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Archie by failing to provide the essential care and medical attention required for his numerous health issues.

The dog was suffering from a range of severe and chronic conditions, including serious skin problems, alopecia, erythema, pruritus, pyoderma, as well as physical injuries such as bruising, ulcerations, bleeding, and overgrown nails.

These ailments indicated a prolonged period of neglect and inadequate care.

The neglect came to light after a workman who was visiting the Harrisons’ home expressed concern about Archie’s condition.

Disturbed by the dog's appearance and health, the worker reported the matter to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA).

Animal welfare officers responded promptly and took Archie into their care to ensure his safety and treatment.

Archie’s condition was visibly distressing, and photographs from around January 2019 depict the extent of his suffering.

The case highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglect.

During the court hearing, defence solicitor Alexander Flett emphasized that the case was one of neglect rather than deliberate cruelty.

He stated, “It truly is a case of neglect and not deliberate cruelty.

They didn’t understand the responsibilities involved.” As a result of their actions, both Gail and James Harrison were fined £200 each.

Additionally, they received a five-year ban from owning or controlling any dog, a restriction that will remain in effect until January 2026.

The case was reported by the Central Fife Times, underscoring the community’s concern over animal welfare and the importance of accountability in pet care.
