OFFENDER FREDDIE ELLIOT MILLIS SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ASSAULT
The survivor of a series of severe historic sexual assaults has spoken publicly about how her life has been altered since the incidents and the toll it has taken on her mental well-being.In 2018, she courageously came forward, reporting the abuse to Surrey Police a decade after the events took place.
Following an investigation, 29-year-old Freddie Elliot Millis, of Manor Gardens, Shamley Green, was convicted of multiple sexual offenses against a minor and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Millis, who was 16 at the time of the offenses— which included the rape of a girl under 13 and other sexual assaults— committed these acts over a two-year period.
In her victim impact statement, read aloud after Millis’s conviction, she detailed how the trauma affected her mental health: “I don’t remember much of my childhood and think I have blocked it out as a way of coping with what happened to me.
My short-term memory is poor, and I believe this is related.
Filling out forms for my A-Levels and UCAS applications forces me to recount what happened, which brings back all the emotions I experienced, making it very hard to manage.
Since I had no control over the abuse, it feels unfair that it impacts me so negatively.
This has taken a toll on my mental health, leading to anxiety problems, especially worrying about my friends and being protective of them, particularly around men.
A positive outcome from this experience is that it inspired me to pursue law studies, driven by a desire to protect and support victims of crime.” Support services are available for those impacted.
The Rape and Sexual Assault Support Centre has assisted over 890 victims of historic rape and sexual assault cases.
