FRANCIS O’NEILL FROM WHITHORN, WIGTOWNSHIRE, CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN GLASGOW AND EDINBURGH
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Whithorn in Wigtownshire, Francis O’Neill, aged 61, has been found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed decades ago. The convictions stem from crimes that took place over a span of several years, beginning in the early 1980s, and involve multiple victims, including a young girl and a boy, as well as a teenage girl.According to court records, O’Neill was convicted of raping a seven-year-old girl in Wigtownshire between July and August of 1982. The victim, now 38 years old, recounted that despite the trauma inflicted upon her, O’Neill was surprisingly kind and made her feel special at the time. The court heard that he also indecently assaulted her, actions that have now been formally recognized as criminal offenses.
In addition to the assault on the young girl, O’Neill was convicted of sexually abusing a boy between the ages of nine and ten. This abuse occurred from July 1982 through December 1985. The young man, now 39, testified that O’Neill approached him while he was out playing and used manipulation to coerce him into silence. The court was told that O’Neill bribed the boy with cash and cigarettes to keep the abuse secret, a tactic that prolonged the suffering of the victim.
Further charges against O’Neill included making indecent comments to a 15-year-old girl between January 1979 and January 1980. O’Neill denied all allegations, claiming that his victims were fabricating stories to harm him. However, the evidence presented in court, along with the victims’ testimonies, led to his conviction.
The victims, after years of silence, eventually decided to report the incidents to the police, which led to O’Neill’s arrest and subsequent trial. The case was heard at the High Court in Glasgow, where he was found guilty of five charges, some of which are considered extremely serious, including the rape of a young child.
During the sentencing hearing, Lady Wise, the presiding judge, ordered O’Neill to be remanded in custody. She emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “You have been convicted of five charges some of which are extremely serious matters, including the rape of a young child.”
O’Neill is scheduled to be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh next month, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined. The case has left the community of Whithorn and Wigtownshire in shock, highlighting the long-lasting impact of these crimes and the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse.
