FR EDWARD GALLAGHER FROM LIFFORD FACES COURT OVER CHILD SEXUAL COMMUNICATION CHARGES

A Catholic priest from Lifford, County Donegal, identified as Fr Edward Gallagher, has recently appeared before the courts in connection with serious allegations involving attempted sexual communication with a minor. The proceedings took place via video-link at Londonderry Magistrates' Court, where the gravity of the case was clearly evident.

During the hearing, a police officer from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) provided testimony linking Mr Gallagher to the alleged offenses. The officer stated that evidence could connect Gallagher to the incidents purported to have occurred between April 2 and April 17. The court was informed that Gallagher, who hails from Orchard Park in Lifford, confirmed his identity and acknowledged that he understood the charges laid against him. Despite this, he chose not to apply for bail at this stage of the proceedings.

As the case continues to develop, it has been scheduled for further hearings in May. The next court date is set for May 9, when a bail application may be considered, depending on the progress of ongoing discussions between Gallagher’s legal representatives, the police, and the prosecution. Gallagher, aged 58, is currently detained in custody, and his legal team, led by counsel Stephen Chapman, indicated that they were not prepared to proceed with a bail application during this session because unresolved issues remain.

In a widely circulated video from last month, Gallagher was seen being approached and challenged by a group of individuals known as paedophile hunters. This footage has garnered significant public attention and added to the controversy surrounding the case.

Gallagher, who serves as a curate in the parishes of Clonleigh, Camus, and Leckpatrick, is accused of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child under the age of 16 between April 2 and April 17. The court heard that he was being held in custody and that his legal team had requested full legal aid, which was granted by Judge John Rea.

Following his arrest, Gallagher has been suspended from his clerical duties by the Diocese of Derry. The diocese has also initiated an internal investigation into the allegations. In a statement issued last month, the diocese acknowledged Gallagher’s appearance in court and emphasized the seriousness with which they are treating the matter. They clarified that the internal investigation would proceed in a manner that does not interfere with the criminal proceedings. The diocese also urged anyone with concerns or allegations of child abuse to contact the appropriate authorities, including the PSNI, Social Services in Northern Ireland, An Garda Síochána, or Tusla in the Republic of Ireland. Contact details for diocesan safeguarding are available on the diocese’s official website and in churches across the region.

As the legal process unfolds, Gallagher remains in custody, with the next court appearance scheduled for May 9, where further developments, including a potential bail application, are anticipated. The case continues to attract significant media and public attention, given the serious nature of the charges and the prominent role Gallagher holds within the community.
