EWAN HAYNES
On November 22, 2022, South Wales Police visited Haynes’ home following reports that child abuse images had been uploaded from his address.
During the search, authorities seized his iPhone, MacBook Pro, and a desktop computer.
Analysis of these devices revealed the presence of 88 of the most serious Category A images of children, alongside 52 Category B and 75 Category C images and videos.
Furthermore, authorities found over a thousand illegal images and graphic material involving animals.
Court proceedings revealed that the images ranged in age from two to ten years, with some dating back to June of the previous year.
On messaging app Telegram, Haynes inquired about acquiring illegal images, asking a contact “Have you got anywhere?” The contact responded with two Category A images, and Haynes disclosed that he might have obtained some images from a 14-year-old.
He also shared six Category C images.
Investigators uncovered internet searches related to illegal content and found access to the dark web on his device.
Though Haynes initially refused to unlock his social media accounts, he eventually admitted to police during interviews through a prepared statement.
The 24-year-old defendant from Subway Road admitted to charges including the distribution and production of child abuse images, possession of restricted images, and owning extreme pornography involving animals.
His lawyer, Mr.
Donnison, pointed out that Haynes had no previous offenses, cooperated early with authorities, and showed a desire to reform.
The defense suggested that with proper support and psycho-educational interventions from probation services, the risk of re-offending could be reduced, especially considering his mental health struggles aggravated by the pandemic.
Sentencing was delivered by Recorder Andrew Hammond, who emphasized the real and horrific nature of the abuse depicted.
Haynes was sentenced to a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years.
He is also required to complete 80 hours of community service, attend mental health treatment, register as a sex offender for a decade, and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.
