ERNEST KUJAWSKI FROM HAMPTON PARK INVOLVED IN BRUTAL ATTACK ON POLICE DOG ERNIE IN SHIRLEY

On the night of February 5, 2020, a serious incident unfolded on Shirley High Street involving Ernest Piotr Kujawski, a known offender from Hampton Park. The events began around 12:47 am when police officers responded to reports of a car theft in the area. PC Mark Farley and his police dog, Ernie, a Mechelse herder, arrived swiftly at the scene to investigate the disturbance.

During their patrol, Kujawski was observed and suspected of carrying a weapon, prompting the officers to pursue him. As the officers approached, Kujawski attempted to evade arrest by fleeing the scene. In a desperate attempt to apprehend him, PC Farley deployed Ernie to stop Kujawski from escaping. However, the situation escalated when Kujawski ran into his residence, located on Mayfield Road, Southampton, and managed to trap Ernie between a door, causing the police dog to suffer injuries to his paw. The aggressive act of slamming the door on Ernie left the dog whimpering and yelping in pain, a distressing sight for all involved.

Realizing the severity of the situation, PC Farley immediately called for backup. With the assistance of a member of the public, the officers were able to free Ernie from the trap. The police spokesperson later confirmed that Ernie had recovered well from his injuries and continued to serve as a valuable member of the police force. The incident highlighted the bravery and resilience of both the police officers and their canine partner.

In recognition of their courage and professionalism during this high-threat situation, PC Mark Farley and Ernie received a Chief Constable Commendation. The award acknowledged their bravery, resilience, and dedication in the face of danger while detaining suspects. PC Farley expressed his pride in Ernie’s actions, stating, “Ernie did a fantastic job, and he would do so again without hesitation. It was by far the most difficult moment as a dog handler for me, putting him in harm’s way is never taken lightly, but we are here to protect the public. I am honoured to have received the award, but even more proud to see Ernie getting the recognition he deserves.”

Following the incident, Kujawski was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. His sentencing included a requirement to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and to pay £123 in compensation. The case underscores the dangers faced by police animals and the importance of their role in law enforcement, especially in complex and threatening situations.
