ABERDEEN WOMAN CONVICTED OF BRUTAL MURDER OF MAN IN FLAT
A woman named Elizabeth Sweeney, aged 36, has been convicted of the brutal murder of Neil Jolly inside his flat in Aberdeen. She was on trial at the High Court in Aberdeen, facing charges of murder by assaulting Mr.
Jolly, 49, with a kettle, repeatedly hitting him in the head and body.
Sweeney, who was a known crack and heroin addict at the time, was found guilty by a jury that unanimously rejected her claim that she killed Jolly in self-defence.
She also faced accusations of attempting to conceal the crime by cleaning the body and covering it with a duvet, but was acquitted of those charges.
Sweeney denied the murder and claimed self-defence, alleging that she found Jolly raping her in her sleep early on June 25, 2023.
However, the jury found her guilty of murder, with the evidence including CCTV footage showing her entering and leaving Jolly’s flat during the days before his death.
Witness Matthew Green testified that he saw her blood-stained trainers and heard her confessing to the murder with a laugh.
The judge, Andrew Miller, described murder as the most serious crime in Scotland and announced that Sweeney would be sentenced to life imprisonment, with the sentence delayed until March 3.
The court noted her prior convictions for violence and previous prison sentences.
On the day of the murder, Sweeney had been seen walking around Aberdeen, meeting friends, consuming drugs, and drinking.
CCTV footage shows her in the days after Mr.
Jolly’s death walking the streets and engaging in various activities.
Following her arrest, police discovered signs of a struggle and blood spatter in Jolly’s flat.
Sweeney was also captured on camera in the days before the murder, wearing trainers soaked in blood, which she claimed to have stepped in after killing Jolly.
Her actions and the evidence gathered led to her conviction for murder and concealment of the body, with a potential life sentence to follow.
