DUNCAN HANNER FROM FISHBOURNE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL IN CHICHESTER
In a case that has shocked the local community of Fishbourne, Duncan Hanner, a man once regarded as a respected figure, has been sentenced to serve time in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a teenage girl.The incident, which took place over a span of two years, from 2008 to 2010, has brought to light disturbing allegations against Hanner, who was 53 years old at the time of the trial.
Hanner appeared before the court at Chichester Crown Court, where he was found guilty of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16.
Despite the conviction, Hanner maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, pleading not guilty to all charges.
The court's verdict came after a detailed examination of the evidence presented by the prosecution.
The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was approximately 13 or 14 years old during the period when the offenses occurred.
The emotional and psychological impact of the abuse has been profound, with the victim reportedly feeling guilt and distress, partly because she was unable to speak out at the time.
Prosecutor Richard Hearnden emphasized the victim's feelings, stating, “Even though she was a child, she still feels guilty herself and upset because she couldn’t say anything at the time about the abuse.” Hanner, who resides on Caspian Close in Fishbourne, was described by his defense lawyer, Victoria Maude, as a man of previously good character.
She highlighted his standing within the Fishbourne community, asserting that he was well-regarded and had no prior criminal record.
However, the judge, Robert Fraser, was clear in his sentencing remarks, underscoring the gravity of the offenses and the importance of protecting vulnerable young girls from predatory individuals like Hanner.
Judge Fraser stated, “Young girls must be free from harmful influences like yours while they mature.
It was that vulnerability you took advantage of.” As a result of his conviction, Hanner was sentenced to 15 months in prison and was also banned from teaching or working with children under the age of 16, a measure aimed at preventing any further harm and safeguarding the community from potential future offenses.
