A 50-year-old man named Donald Washington Hayles has been at the center of a series of violent and abusive incidents directed at his elderly mother in Nottingham. The disturbing events, which unfolded over a span of a few months, culminated in Hayles being brought before Nottingham Crown Court and subsequently sentenced to prison for his actions.

According to court reports, Hayles was heavily intoxicated and under the influence of illegal drugs during both episodes of violence. The first incident took place in October of the previous year. Witnesses described him as being extremely drunk, with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit for driving. During this episode, he was reportedly searching for his phone with his trousers around his ankles, a detail that was highlighted during the court proceedings. The situation escalated when Hayles demanded £10 from his mother, who was unable to comply. His frustration turned violent as he threatened to break the family’s television in the kitchen. The assault then turned physical when he headbutted his mother in the face while she was seated on the sofa, resulting in swelling and bruising to her right eye.

The second incident occurred on December 16, despite Hayles being released on bail with strict conditions that prohibited him from contacting his mother or visiting her residence. Ignoring these restrictions, Hayles appeared uninvited at his mother’s home. He verbally abused her, calling her a prostitute, and then attempted to pour boiling water from a kettle over her. His mother managed to push him away, but she was splashed with the hot water, which caused blistering and scalds on her skin. Her injuries were severe enough to require hospital treatment. Her statement to authorities expressed her distress, emphasizing that his violent behavior was tearing their family apart and that she disapproved of his actions.

Following his arrest, tests confirmed that Hayles had a blood alcohol level of 113 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly exceeding the legal limit. He also admitted to using various illegal drugs. During police interviews, he made threatening remarks about his mother, stating, "if she is not out of the house when I am out of custody, I will ******* murder her."

Hayles was subsequently sentenced to a total of four years and two months in prison. The sentence included 32 months for the assault on his mother on December 16, and an additional 12 months for the earlier assault. His convictions also encompassed unrelated offenses, such as attacking a police officer and possessing crystal meth. Upon his release, a restraining order was issued, explicitly prohibiting him from making any contact with his mother, in an effort to protect her from further harm.
