DONALD MORRISON OF ISLE OF LEWIS SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE IN STORNOWAY

In a harrowing case heard at Stornoway Sheriff Court, Donald Neil Morrison, a man originally from the Isle of Lewis, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for the prolonged sexual abuse of a young girl over a period of seven years.

Morrison, now residing in Dufftown, Moray, was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely, reflecting the severity and ongoing risk associated with his crimes.

Details of the case revealed that Morrison, aged 48 at the time of sentencing, had targeted his victim repeatedly during her childhood on the Isle of Lewis.

The court heard that the abuse began when the girl was still an infant and continued until she was a young girl, with Morrison’s actions escalating over time.

The victim estimated that the abuse occurred approximately 100 times, with Morrison himself acknowledging that it happened “a lot of times,” possibly once every three or four weeks.

The court was told that Morrison’s predatory behavior was so frightening that the girl was too scared to seek help, fearing Morrison’s warning that she would “be in big trouble” if she did.

Throughout the proceedings, it was emphasized that Morrison’s conduct was deeply disturbing.

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist, referencing a background report, stated that Morrison “treated the child as a sexual object for gratification numerous times.” The court heard that Morrison’s abuse was so severe that the victim was “little more than a baby” when it began, and her life has been profoundly affected by his actions.

She continues to suffer from the psychological scars, including depression, panic attacks, and issues with alcohol and medication, which have persisted into her adulthood.

Morrison’s criminal history includes a previous guilty plea for lewd, indecent, and libidinous practices committed between January 1977 and December 1983.

The court was informed that Morrison had moved from the Isle of Lewis to Inverness earlier this year, following reports of his offenses.

His lawyer expressed that there was no explanation for his criminal conduct and conveyed Morrison’s regret to the victim and her family.

The legal representative also mentioned that Morrison had to leave the island and was in the process of selling a property he inherited from his mother on Lewis.

Additional personal details revealed that Morrison’s marriage of 17 years had ended, and he now has little or no contact with his own children.

The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing concern for public safety, especially considering the proximity of his former residence to a school and a playing field frequently used by children, less than 25 meters away.

Morrison’s case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims.
