Bierley Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community, Dominic Brannan, a 32-year-old man from Bierley, Bradford, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of attacking two young schoolgirls in separate incidents. The court heard that Brannan, who is described as powerfully built, committed these disturbing assaults within a short span of time, causing significant distress to the victims and their families.

The first assault occurred early in the morning on Wednesday, November 25 of the previous year. Brannan, who was near his residence on Shetcliffe Lane in Bierley, approached a 13-year-old girl as she was preparing to board her school bus. He attempted to engage her in conversation before following her. Without warning, he grabbed her from behind and subjected her to a sexual assault. During the attack, Brannan reportedly said, “I love you,” before fleeing the scene, as detailed by prosecutor Abdul Iqbal during the court proceedings.

Just a few minutes later, Brannan targeted a second victim, a 12-year-old girl, in a nearby bus shelter. He forcibly pushed her to the ground and carried out a serious sexual assault, leaving her visibly distressed and shaken. The court was informed that these assaults took place within a matter of minutes, highlighting the rapid succession of Brannan’s predatory behavior.

It was also revealed that Brannan had a prior incident of concern. Approximately five months before these attacks, he had been cautioned by police for sexually assaulting a young woman inside an Asda supermarket located on Rooley Lane in Bradford. This previous caution underscored a pattern of troubling behavior that had not been fully addressed.

In March, Brannan pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and assault by penetration, which led to the case being adjourned for psychological, psychiatric, and probation reports to be prepared. The court considered these reports before delivering its final judgment.

On the day of sentencing, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC imposed a 12-year extended prison sentence on Brannan. The sentence comprises four years of immediate imprisonment, followed by an eight-year period of license, which is the maximum allowed under law. The judge emphasized that Brannan’s mental state was significantly impaired due to catastrophic head injuries sustained in a road accident at the age of 16. Despite functioning at a level comparable to a boy of ten or eleven, Brannan’s physical strength and aggressive tendencies posed a serious risk to the community.

To further protect potential victims, the judge issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order with no time limit and mandated that Brannan register as a sex offender for life. These measures aim to prevent any future offenses and ensure ongoing monitoring of his behavior.

During an earlier court hearing, Brannan’s mother, Gloria, expressed her remorse, stating that her son was “deeply sorry.” However, the families of the two young girls involved in the attacks issued a joint statement rejecting this sentiment. They emphasized that neither family accepted Brannan’s apology, citing his initial plea of not guilty and the trauma inflicted upon their daughters.

The case has left a lasting impact on the local community, raising concerns about safety and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and support systems for victims of sexual violence in Bradford and beyond.
