Angus Montrose Rapist
In a significant case that has shocked the local communities of Angus and Montrose, Derrick Heeney, a well-known artist and businessman, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of historic rape and sexual abuse involving young girls. The conviction was handed down at the High Court in Glasgow, bringing closure to a long-standing investigation into allegations that spanned over a decade.

Heeney, aged 62, was the proprietor of the Arts ‘n’ Frames shop located in Montrose, a business that was well recognized within the local arts community. Despite his public persona, he was accused of preying on vulnerable young girls, some as young as five years old, over a period that extended from 1983 to 1996. The crimes took place in various locations, including Dundee and Forfar in Angus, where the victims resided or were targeted.

The court heard that Heeney had previously faced a trial in Edinburgh, where he was convicted on six charges, including the rape of two girls and the sexual abuse of others. During the recent proceedings, the jury was presented with disturbing evidence of his misconduct, which included allegations that he had manipulated and exploited his victims under the guise of offering help, such as claiming to assist one girl with a broken radio.

Heeney had consistently denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the legal process. However, the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure a conviction. The judge, Lord Mulholland, did not hold back in his remarks, describing Heeney’s conduct as “despicable” and emphasizing that he would now face the consequences of his actions. In his sentencing remarks, Lord Mulholland stated, “Your conduct was despicable and you will now pay a heavy price.”

The judge also recounted a particularly disturbing incident where one victim was reportedly lured into a dingy flat before being assaulted. The court heard that Heeney had made troubling comments to one of the victims, suggesting that if she became pregnant, she should claim that the father was someone else, a statement that further highlighted the manipulative and predatory nature of his crimes. Jurors described his explanations and claims as “risible,” indicating their disbelief and disdain for his attempts to justify his actions.

This case has brought to light the dark side of a man who was once respected in his community, revealing the extent of his abuse and the devastating impact on his victims. The sentencing marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to address and combat historic sexual abuse, especially cases involving vulnerable young girls. The communities of Angus and Montrose, along with the wider public, are left to reflect on the importance of vigilance and justice in safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society.
