DEREK NORTON OF CHARLTON MARSHALL SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR ABUSE IN BOURNEMOUTH
In a harrowing case that has shocked the local community, Derek Norton, a resident of Charlton Marshall, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of heinous crimes committed against his own daughter. The victim, Hayley, courageously came forward to share her story, shedding light on the years of suffering she endured at the hands of her father, which spanned over a decade.Hayley's ordeal began when she was just seven years old. Her father, Derek Norton, subjected her to a series of sexual abuses, which he kept hidden from the outside world. During her testimony, Hayley revealed that her father had threatened her with the loss of her family if she ever disclosed what was happening. He told her that such experiences were common among girls her age and their fathers, a manipulation that kept her silent for many years.
She explained that her father’s control over her was pervasive and persistent, maintaining a facade of normalcy while secretly perpetrating these acts. It was only in 2013, after years of suffering in silence, that Hayley found the strength to report her father to the authorities. Her decision to speak out was driven by a desire to prevent other children from enduring similar abuse and to bring her father to justice.
Hayley expressed her hope that her story would serve a greater purpose. “Something good has to come out of this so I want to tell my story, help other children and become a counsellor,” she stated. She also shared her feelings of relief and empowerment, saying, “I waited a long time to report the abuse but now I feel like a better person and that I can finally become the person I want to be.”
The abuse, which began when she was seven, continued until she was eleven years old. During this period, her father assaulted her both at their home and at her grandmother’s house, often when no one else was around. Hayley recounted that her father would even abuse her when she was unwell, further illustrating the extent of his cruelty. She noted that the abuse suddenly ceased when she was eleven, but she was left with lasting scars and confusion about her experiences.
Throughout her childhood, the Nortons appeared to be a typical, devout family. They lived in Turlin Moor and regularly attended St Gabriel’s Church and the Poole Christian Fellowship. Hayley emphasized that no one outside their family had any idea of the dark secrets hidden behind closed doors. The family’s outward appearance was one of normalcy and community involvement, masking the disturbing reality of the abuse.
Following a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court, Derek Norton was found guilty of multiple charges, including rape and seven counts of indecent assault against his daughter. The court sentenced him to 16 years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities after his release. The verdict marked a significant step in justice for Hayley and a stark reminder of the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of how long it may take to find the courage to do so.
