DENNIS FLETCHER JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN BASWICH AND WEEPING CROSS
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Baswich and Weeping Cross, Dennis Fletcher, a 62-year-old piano teacher, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of heinous child abuse offenses. The crimes, which spanned nearly a decade, involved the sexual assault of seven young girls during piano lessons held at Fletcher's residence.Fletcher, a self-employed music instructor residing on Belvedere Close in Baswich, was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault. These offenses took place primarily in the 1970s, specifically between 1971 and 1979, at his former home located on Stockton Lane in Weeping Cross. The victims, all girls aged between seven and thirteen, endured a pattern of abuse that has now come to light after decades of silence.
The investigation into Fletcher's actions was initiated in April of the previous year, following a courageous disclosure from one of his victims who reached out to social services. This revelation prompted a thorough inquiry by Staffordshire Police, ultimately leading to Fletcher's arrest and subsequent prosecution.
During an earlier hearing, Fletcher admitted to nine counts of indecent assault, acknowledging his misconduct. The court proceedings culminated in his sentencing at Stafford Crown Court, where he was also ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for the remainder of his life. Additionally, Fletcher was barred from working with anyone under the age of 18, a measure designed to protect other potential victims from harm.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Dunning, commenting on the case after the sentencing, expressed strong condemnation of Fletcher's actions. He stated, “Mr Fletcher abused his position of trust and acted in a most despicable manner. His victims suffered considerable trauma as a result of his actions, and I am pleased that justice has been served.” Dunning emphasized the importance of accountability, noting that the passage of time does not diminish the severity of such crimes. “Today’s sentence will hopefully serve as a warning to others like Mr Fletcher that they cannot hide behind the passage of time,” he added.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts of authorities to bring justice to victims of abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
