Basingstoke Man Sentenced Over 10 Years for Rape of Teenager

Declan Westwell, a Basingstoke paedophile, has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison for raping a youngster in Basingstoke.
Declan Westwell, 29, of no fixed address, sexually assaulted a teenage girl whom he did not know, in the Oakridge area on Wednesday, May 8 of this year.
Following a swift investigation, Westwell was detained. He was subsequently charged with raping a 13-year-old girl and taken into custody.
Although he denied the charges, he was convicted after a trial at Winchester Crown Court last month.
On December 20, Westwell received a sentence of ten and a half years imprisonment at Winchester Crown Court.
DC Thomas Bailey, from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, explained: “Declan Westwell used a false name and identity to manipulate the girl – whom he had encountered randomly. Despite knowing her age, he raped her, then warned her not to disclose what had happened.
“She later reported the incident to police, leading to Westwell’s arrest. He contested the charges, but a jury unanimously found him guilty.
“The sentence includes a four-year extension of license, recognizing the threat posed by Westwell to the public. Upon release, he will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
“We hope this case reassures other victims that their reports will be taken seriously when reporting sexual offences.
