BELFAST DOCTOR CONVICTED OF MURDER IN VIOLENT FAMILY HISTORY
A court has been informed that Belfast-based physician Declan Kevin O'Neill was raised in an environment characterized by extreme hardship, including conditions described as "almost third-world" and marked by persistent emotional abuse and domestic violence. On 21 October 2017, he assaulted his mother, Anne O'Neill, with a chisel in her parents' yard on Ardmore Avenue.
Witnesses in the area heard her cries for assistance as the attack took place, resulting in severe head injuries.
It was revealed during proceedings that O'Neill confessed to killing his mother and changed his plea to guilty in September to spare his family additional trauma.
The court heard auditory details of her pleading, with her crying out commands like "leave me alone, Declan" and "somebody help me" during the assault.
Physical evidence showed her blood and hair on the weapon and in O'Neill's vehicle.
He was quickly detained following his arrest, with searches of his residence uncovering recent showering, clothes in the washing machine, and a bag containing a rubber mask, tape, and the chisel used in the attack.
Family members described his upbringing as tumultuous and relayed that he had experienced controlling and abusive behavior from their mother, which they claimed had devastated their lives.
The judge will determine the sentencing conditions the following Thursday.
