DEAN NEWTON SENTENCED IN PLYMOUTH FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING VULNERABLE VICTIM
Dean Newton, a man previously residing in Basingstoke, has been handed a prison sentence of five years and three months after being convicted of serious sexual offences that occurred in Plymouth. The incidents took place in October 2019, following a night out during which Newton engaged in inappropriate and non-consensual sexual activity with a victim who was asleep at the time. The victim was inside a hotel room when the assault occurred, and Newton's actions included taking photographs of the victim while they were naked, further compounding the severity of the offences.
These crimes involved the same individual and only came to light after Newton himself reported the incident to the police in January 2020. At the time, Newton was 51 years old and was living in Basingstoke. His admission led to his subsequent arrest in Basingstoke, where he was taken into custody.
Newton faced a trial at Plymouth Crown Court, where he was found guilty of causing or inciting a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent, as well as voyeurism. The court proceedings commenced on July 2, 2024, and the sentencing was carried out on July 11, 2024.
During the sentencing, Officer in charge, Detective Constable Andrea Dominik, highlighted the gravity of Newton’s actions, emphasizing that he exploited a vulnerable victim, causing significant emotional and psychological harm. The police force reiterated their dedication to combating sexual violence and their ongoing efforts to encourage victims to come forward and seek justice.
Newton’s case underscores the importance of vigilance and support for victims of sexual offences, and the authorities continue to work tirelessly to ensure such offenders are held accountable for their actions.
