PORT TENNANT MAN SENTENCED FOR BREACHING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ORDER AS POLICE HIT 100 DVPO MILESTONE
Dean Fitzgerald, aged 54 and residing at David Williams Terrace in Port Tennant, was sentenced to serve 21 days in jail after he assaulted and issued threats toward his ex-partner in a public street. This act was a clear breach of a previously issued Domestic Violence Prevention Order (DVPO), which he was legally prohibited from violating.
The incident took place during the enforcement of South Wales Police’s 100th DVPO issued in 2025, emphasizing the police’s ongoing commitment to preventing domestic abuse by utilizing civil orders designed to protect victims when criminal proceedings are not yet applicable.
Fitzgerald has a criminal history related to violence, including a conviction for assault that occurred in Ipswich in November 2023.
His case was heard at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on July 25, 2024, where he pled guilty to attacking a woman and possessing cannabis, classified as a Class B drug.
The court imposed a two-year community order, mandated the completion of a 35-day course called Building Better Relationships, and required drug testing over a year.
He was also fined £120, with additional court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £114.
A Domestic Violence Prevention Order is a civil court directive issued following a police-issued Domestic Violence Protection Notice.
It can prevent a perpetrator from contacting or approaching the victim for up to 28 days, offering a safeguard for victims to access support and resources.
These civil orders are applied when criminal charges cannot be immediately pursued but protection is needed.
Breaking a DVPO is itself a criminal offense, punishable by imprisonment.
