ARDROSSAN MAN DAVID YOUNG GROOMS 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL NEAR SALTCOATS AND ARDROSSAN

In October 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving a man from Ardrossan who is now facing legal consequences after engaging in inappropriate conduct with a minor. David Young, aged 45 and residing on Clyde Terrace in Ardrossan, was found guilty of grooming a 15-year-old girl over a series of weeks, culminating in multiple inappropriate meetings and displays of affection.

According to court records, Young and the girl, who was only 15 at the time, had known each other for approximately three years through their shared involvement in a North Ayrshire martial arts club. Their relationship took a troubling turn starting in late May 2016, when the two began communicating via WhatsApp. During these exchanges, Young made a reference to someone having a crush on the girl, to which he then revealed that he himself harbored feelings for her. The girl responded positively, expressing her love for him in return.

Following this exchange, the pair arranged to meet in person. Their first meeting took place outside The Salt Cot pub, where the girl kissed Young on the mouth. This initial encounter was followed by further meetings, including a walk along the beach between Aldi, The Braes, Saltcoats, and Ardrossan Castle. During these outings, Young asked if she would be his girlfriend, and she agreed. They shared hugs and kisses, although only on the cheek in the presence of others. On another occasion, they sat together on a bench at Cannon Hill, where they shared a kiss.

Over the subsequent weeks, the pair continued to meet, and Young engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the girl, including touching her on the bottom, with her consent. However, the situation escalated when, on June 12, the girl left her phone unattended. Her mother discovered a sexually explicit message from 'David' and brought it to her daughter’s attention. The girl then broke down in tears and confessed that she and Young had been in a romantic relationship.

During the court proceedings, Young pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Sheriff Alistair Watson addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of the case: "You’re a 45-year-old man. You know better and now you’ll have to take responsibility for your disgraceful behaviour towards this child because that’s what she was — a child."

As a result of the hearing, Young’s sentencing was deferred until November to allow for reports to be prepared. In the meantime, he has been placed on the Sex Offender’s Register, reflecting the serious nature of his misconduct and the breach of trust involved in this case.
