DAVID WALSH FROM PORTMARNOCK SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN DUBLIN CIRCUIT COURT
In a case that has shocked the community of Portmarnock and the wider Dublin area, David Walsh, a 56-year-old internal auditor, was found guilty of possessing nearly 2,000 images of child abuse. The incident came to light after authorities uncovered his extensive online activity involving illegal material.Walsh, who resides at Ardilaun in Portmarnock, pleaded guilty to the possession of 1,958 child pornographic images. These images were discovered both at his Portmarnock residence and at Beverton Court in Donabate, with the offences dating back to February 27, 2002. The images depicted young children, primarily females, in various sexual poses and engaged in sexual acts, ranging from infants to children aged 12 or 13.
The case was heard in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where Judge Yvonne Murphy described the offence as “child abuse, plain and simple.” She emphasized the severity of the crime, which involved the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable children through digital means. During the hearing, a probation report was presented, which Judge Murphy described as very positive. The report highlighted Walsh’s significant progress since the incident and noted his efforts to help others, which was seen as a promising sign for his rehabilitation.
To illustrate the nature of the images involved, Judge Murphy was shown 50 sample images from Walsh’s collection. She expressed cautious optimism after reviewing the evidence, noting the findings from the Granada Institute that indicated Walsh’s risk of re-offending was very low. This assessment played a role in her decision to suspend the prison sentence.
Detective Sergeant James Madden provided further details about the case, revealing that Walsh had purchased the illegal images over a six-month period in 1999. The images were obtained from websites hosted by a company called Landslides. The investigation was triggered when U.S. authorities informed Irish police that Walsh had used his AIB Visa card 22 times between January and July 1999 to access child pornography websites.
Walsh’s cooperation with law enforcement was noted as exemplary. When confronted, he allowed police to search his home in Portmarnock, where he produced a CD onto which he had burned the images. It was also revealed that Walsh used a computer at his other residence in Donabate to access and download the illegal material, and he directed police to that location.
At the time of the offences, Walsh was living separately from his wife, although their relationship had not been officially dissolved. His full cooperation and remorse were acknowledged by authorities, with Detective Sergeant Madden stating that Walsh had taken responsibility from the outset and expressed deep regret for his actions. Madden described Walsh as “a totally different and changed man,” noting that he was in a poor mental state during the initial investigation in 2002.
Legal counsel for Walsh, Ms. Aileen Donnelly SC, highlighted that her client was addressing underlying issues such as marital difficulties, low self-esteem, and a troubled childhood, which may have contributed to his offending behavior. Walsh was currently undergoing both individual and group therapy at the Granada Institute, aiming to address these factors.
Following his guilty plea in April, Walsh and his family faced significant media scrutiny, which caused them considerable distress. They took the unusual step of personally informing neighbors about the case to mitigate the impact of media coverage.
Judge Murphy ultimately sentenced Walsh to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended on the condition that he maintain good behavior and keep the peace for the duration of the suspension. Additionally, Walsh was placed on the sex offenders register, where he will remain until April 2009, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
