DAVID THOMAS SENTENCED AFTER FAILING TO CARE FOR DOGS IN AMBLESTON
Puppy farmer David Thomas, born on December 31, 1944, of Wallis, Ambleston, Haverfordwest SA62, was convicted in 2019 for neglecting 25 Labradors kept in extremely poor conditions.The dogs and puppies were kept in environments that were described as "filthy and hazardous." They were deprived of basic necessities such as food and water and were at risk of injury and disease.
Thomas pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offenses.
The court heard that Thomas failed to provide a suitable environment for the 25 dogs, causing unnecessary suffering to five puppies by ignoring their poor conditions.
Additionally, five other dogs suffered due to lack of appropriate veterinary treatment for infections affecting their feet.
Altogether, the dogs—comprising 19 puppies and six adult dogs—were found on the derelict farm.
One puppy was discovered to be dead.
The remaining 25 dogs were rescued and received immediate veterinary care.
RSPCA inspector Keith Hogben described the scene, stating: "When I arrived I just remember thinking what an appalling situation this was.
It was dire.
These dogs and puppies were kept in filthy and hazardous conditions.
They were denied access to food and water, were in danger of injury and disease, and did not have the necessary comfort in terms of shelter and bedding.
They also were not free to exhibit normal behaviour, as they were kept in the dark with poor ventilation." He added, "The puppies looked thin, dehydrated, and were cold.
There was evidence of caked faeces on all their feet, and all their claws were overgrown.
It was just horrible and so sad to see these lovely puppies in such terrible conditions." Following rescue, the dogs were handed over to local authorities for rehoming.
Inspector Hogben expressed gratitude to those who assisted in the case, including the police, local dog wardens, a local veterinarian, and Green Acres Animal Rescue, saying: "We really appreciate all their help in what was a challenging case, due to the number of dogs involved.
These dogs and puppies will now be able to grow up in a loving, safe environment where they will receive proper care." In court, David Thomas received a 24-week custodial sentence, suspended for two years, along with orders to pay £415 in costs and charges.
He was also banned from owning or keeping dogs for life.
