COCKERMOUTH MAN RECEIVES SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR STALKING WITH ABUSIVE CALLS AND MESSAGES
MAGISTRATES have handed a suspended jail term to a 59-year-old Cockermouth man who stalked a woman.
David Taggart, who admitted the offence, stalked the victim between December 28 last year and January 25, repeatedly contacting her with “abusive” messages and phone calls, Carlisle’s Rickergate court heard.
He also turned up at her home, demanding to know who she was with.
The charge states that this "course of conduct" caused the woman serious alarm or distress and had a substantial adverse effect on her day-to-day life.
Magistrates imposed eight weeks jail, suspended for a year.
The sentence includes a three-month alcohol treatment order, to be overseen by the Recovery Steps organisation and up to 15 rehabilitation activity days as well as 40 hours of unpaid work.
The judge imposed a restraining order which bans any contact with the victim except through official legal channels.
This will remain in force until February 24, 2027.
The defendant, of Dale View, Cockermouth, must pay £85 costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
A second charge alleging criminal damage to a window belonging to the victim of the stalking, which happened in the Cockermouth area, was withdrawn by the prosecution.
