DAVID STREETS FROM WHITWELL FACES CHILD ABUSE CHARGES IN DERBY CROWN COURT
In April 2023, a disturbing case unfolded at Derby Crown Court involving David Streets, a 60-year-old man from Whitwell, who has admitted to serious charges of child sexual abuse. The allegations concern offenses committed over a span of nearly a decade, from 2001 to 2010, involving a very young girl who was under the age of 10 at the time of the incidents.Streets appeared before the court this week, supported by a number of individuals, and pleaded guilty to a total of seven separate charges. These charges include two counts of indecency with a child, four counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and one count of indecent exposure. The prosecution, led by Dawn Pritchard, indicated that after consulting with the victim, the plea was deemed acceptable, and as a result, two additional charges against Streets would be dropped.
The court heard that the offenses involved Streets carrying out sexual acts in front of the young girl, who was under 10 years old when the abuse began. The nature of these acts was particularly disturbing, involving not only direct sexual contact but also exposing himself in a manner that was indecent and harmful to the victim.
Following the guilty plea, Miss Pritchard requested that Streets be required to sign the sex offender register until his sentencing, scheduled for June 6. The court granted him bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition on any contact with the victim, whether direct or indirect, and a restriction from visiting the Nottinghamshire street where she resides.
Judge Jonathan Bennett addressed Streets during the hearing, stating, “You have pleaded guilty on the day of trial, the last possible moment, and the only comfort is that the complainant has not had to come to court and give evidence. I do need a (pre-sentence) report and you will be back in court on June 6. All (sentencing) options are very much open.” The judge’s comments underscored the gravity of the case and the serious nature of the charges, leaving the final sentencing decision pending further proceedings.
