A convicted sex offender was apprehended for sharing an image related to child sexual abuse.David Samuel, aged 39 and residing on Oakley Close in Caldicot, was detained after he was lured by an undercover police officer pretending to be a 14-year-old male.
During the investigation, Samuel had sent explicit, nude photographs of himself to the deceptive "boy," Cardiff Crown Court heard.
Prosecutor Charles Archer stated: “He expressed he was horny and asked the ‘boy’ if he wanted to masturbate during a video call.” Upon his arrest and the seizure of his phone, officers discovered numerous illegal images depicting children aged from one to 15 being subjected to sexual abuse.
Mr.
Archer explained: “Among these was an image of a child between one and two years old showing signs of distress while being anally raped.” The phone contained 11 images classified as Category A—the most severe, four images at Category B, and ten at Category C.
Samuel had shared one image classified as Category A.
He admitted guilt to charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor, distributing indecent images of children, possessing illegal images, and three counts of creating explicit photographs of minors.
The offenses occurred between 20 February 2023 and 8 August 2023.
Samuel had no previous convictions related to similar offenses.
His lawyer, Tom Roberts, commented: “The defendant has been employed and is a productive member of society.
He has made an extremely poor judgment.” Presiding judge Recorder Christopher Felstead remarked: “With appropriate intervention, there is a real chance for rehabilitation in your case.” Samuel was sentenced to 20 months in prison, but the term was suspended for two years.
He was additionally ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service and a 25-day rehabilitation program.
He is required to register as a sex offender for ten years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
Furthermore, Samuel must pay a victim surcharge of £337 along with prosecution costs.
