Angus Child Abuser
In a disturbing discovery, law enforcement officials uncovered a significant collection of child abuse images stored on electronic devices during a police raid at a family residence in Angus. The investigation was prompted by intelligence suggesting illegal activity involving the use of digital devices within the property located in Kirkton of Auchterhouse.
On the morning of August 8, 2023, police officers arrived at the scene at approximately 8:38 a.m. and found David Reid, the occupant of the house, present. A thorough and systematic search of the premises was conducted, leading to the seizure of a silver HP laptop, a black Dell laptop, and an external hard drive from Reid’s office area. During the search, authorities discovered material that appeared to be related to child exploitation and abuse, which was subsequently sent for forensic examination.
Despite initial concerns, forensic analysis revealed that none of the images stored on the devices were accessible at the time of the investigation. However, the devices contained a total of 382 images depicting child abuse, with 82 classified at the highest level of depravity. The prosecutor, Gavin Letford, explained that the devices also contained evidence of peer-to-peer file sharing software, which is often used to distribute illicit material related to child exploitation.
The content found on the HP laptop included images of female children aged between 12 and 15 years old. The Dell laptop, however, contained even more disturbing material, featuring children as young as three years old. Some of the images depicted children engaging in sexual acts with animals, highlighting the severity and depravity of the material stored on these devices. It was noted that no data was recovered from the external hard drive, which suggests that the illegal content was primarily stored on the laptops.
David Reid, aged 61 and currently residing in a motorhome park in Drymen near Loch Lomond, pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children between September 4, 2022, and August 3, 2023. His plea was entered during a court hearing at Dundee Sheriff Court, where he faced a single charge related to the possession of such material. Reid’s solicitor, John Boyle, requested that mitigation be reserved until pre-sentencing reports could be prepared and urged the court to continue Reid’s bail status.
The sheriff, Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith, addressed Reid directly, emphasizing the seriousness of the crimes. He stated, “These are images of real individuals as young as three years of age often from the poorest parts of the world who are exploited by organised criminals. This is particularly serious.”
Following his guilty plea, Reid was placed on the sex offenders register on an interim basis. The court scheduled a further hearing for October, when detailed reports will be available to inform sentencing. In the aftermath of the police raid, Reid was reported missing, prompting an urgent appeal for information. He was located five days later and returned to custody, ensuring he remains under supervision pending sentencing.
