He also told her that no one would believe her if she tried to report the abuse. The emotional trauma inflicted on this girl was profound; she later confided to police that during the assaults, she felt so filthy and worthless that she attempted to cleanse herself by bathing in bleach, a desperate act driven by her feelings of shame and self-hatred.

Another victim was coerced into performing a sexual act and was forced to pose in lewd positions while Payne pretended to take photographs of her. These acts highlight the manipulative and predatory nature of Payne’s crimes, which targeted vulnerable children and inflicted lasting psychological scars.

During the court proceedings, defense counsel Brian Reece acknowledged the gravity of Payne’s actions but pointed out that his client had pleaded guilty, thereby sparing the victims from reliving their traumatic experiences in court. Reece stated, “He understands that the sentence will be a long one.” The judge, John Crocker, described the case as “an appalling case – absolutely appalling,” underscoring the severity of the crimes committed.

Following his conviction, Payne will be subject to a lifelong requirement to sign the sex offenders’ register and will remain on license after his release until the end of his sentence.
