DAVID PATRICK SENTENCED FOR RAPE OF SUTTON-ON-HULL WOMAN WHO WAS JUST 10 YEARS OLD
In a landmark case that has spanned over three decades, a woman from Sutton-on-Hull has finally seen justice served after enduring horrific abuse at the hands of her father, David Patrick.The victim, who chose to waive her right to anonymity, recounted her traumatic experience of being raped by her father when she was only 10 years old, a crime that was committed more than 36 years ago.
David Patrick, now aged 67, was brought before Hull Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges of indecent assault and rape.
The court heard that the abuse took place during the early 1970s, specifically when the victim was aged nine and ten.
Patrick’s actions included grooming and sexually assaulting his daughter, with the abuse ceasing only when her mother decided to leave the family home, taking her daughter with her to escape the ongoing torment.
The court was informed that Patrick admitted to seven counts of indecent assault and one count of rape.
Prosecutor Mark McKone highlighted that the indecent assault charges represented over 100 separate offences, illustrating the extent and severity of the abuse.
Additionally, Patrick pleaded guilty to two indecent assault charges against another female victim, further emphasizing his pattern of predatory behavior.
Judge John Dowse sentenced Patrick to 11 years in prison, expressing his condemnation of the defendant’s actions.
The judge stated, “You raped your own daughter.
She was just 10.
It seems to me that although you may have considerable remorse, you do not understand the impact you have had on your daughter, which is lifelong.” The victim, who has endured years of silent suffering, spoke openly about her ordeal and the long-lasting effects it has had on her life.
She revealed that she had struggled with nightmares, depression, and sleep disturbances, often relying on medication to cope.
Despite these challenges, she expressed relief and a sense of liberation now that justice has been achieved.
She shared her gratitude for the support she received from the police, Victim Support, and Hull Rape Crisis, acknowledging that their assistance was vital in helping her navigate the difficult process of bringing her abuser to justice.
“It has been brilliant because I don’t know how I would have done it without the help I had from the police, Victim Support and Hull Rape Crisis,” she said.
Detective Constable Steve Bromby, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward.
He emphasized that her courage sends a powerful message to other victims of abuse, assuring them that they will be listened to and believed if they choose to report their experiences to the authorities.
The case serves as a stark reminder that justice can be achieved, even after many years of silence and suffering.
