DOMESTIC ABUSER JAILED AFTER ATTACKING AND HUMILIATING EX

David McAvoy appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday after admitting to a single domestic abuse charge.

The 43-year-old caused injuries to his ex-partner over a six-month period, including bruising on her face and a broken tooth.

His abusive conduct involved restricting her from leaving rooms and humiliating her by handing her a bucket when she needed to use the toilet.

Sheriff William Summers described McAvoy’s actions as “very serious” during his sentencing.

Fiscal depute Kerr explained that on May 31 last year, at a property on Clifton Road, McAvoy’s behaviour turned aggressive.

She said, “The accused became angry at the complainer and he threw a pint glass, causing it to smash,” she said.

She added that McAvoy then restrained her on the sofa and shouted about money, causing her to run to the bedroom in an attempt to escape.

He responded by punching her in the head and body.

She managed to contact police from the bathroom after escaping.

In a separate incident on November 25 at a home on Dee Street, McAvoy assaulted the same woman again.

Ms Kerr reported that after drinking alcohol, McAvoy became confrontational, shouting at her about her ex-partner.

He then grabbed her T-shirt, and during a struggle, he seized her fingers.

The woman remembered being held in the kitchen with her head over the sink while he turned on the tap, and later, he grabbed her necklace from behind.

The following early hours, McAvoy calmed down, but then prevented the woman from leaving by standing in front of the door saying she must stay.

When she asked to use the toilet, he handed her a bucket instead, refusing to let her go.

Later that day, the woman called emergency services after McAvoy had a seizure from an unknown medication.

She told operators she was in danger and needed police help.

Her injuries included fractured fingers, bruising, and a broken front tooth, all caused by McAvoy.

A court report indicated that McAvoy showed remorse but suffered from unresolved trauma, which he self-medicated with alcohol.

The sheriff sentenced him to 27 months imprisonment, with the sentence backdated to his initial detention on November 27 of the previous year.

Having already served almost five months, he has just over two years remaining and could be eligible for release on license by March 2027.

Sheriff Summers highlighted the seriousness of the offences, noting McAvoy’s prior assault convictions, and confirmed that there is no appropriate alternative to custody.

He also imposed a 10-year contact ban on the victim.
