MAN JAILED FOR 11.5 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF FIVE GIRLS
Content Advisory: This story contains details that may be upsetting to some readers.A man from County Mayo has received an 11 and a half-year prison term after admitting to abusing five children over nearly twenty years.
David Langdon, aged 61, residing at St Patrick’s Estate in Ballina, entered a guilty plea to seven counts of sexual assault involving young girls, just days before his trial was scheduled to begin at Castlebar Circuit Court last year.
The court heard that the abusive acts occurred between April 1996 and July 2015, during which each victim was led to believe they were Langdon’s sole target.
The youngest victim disclosed the abuse to the Gardaí in 2019, while still a minor.
During the sentencing hearing, the court acknowledged that the victims knew Langdon and requested that their identities be protected in the media.
The victims were between five and twelve years old at the time of the abuse.
Judge Sinéad McMullan noted that much of the misconduct happened during sleepovers times when children should have felt secure in their own beds.
She expressed concern that many of the victims still fear darkness and struggle with loneliness; one woman admitted she is too afraid to go downstairs during the night to prepare bottles for her children.
In her judgment, Judge McMullan described the offenses as being at the higher end of seriousness, constituting a serious breach of trust.
She referenced testimonies from earlier hearings, including one victim who revealed that Langdon had assaulted her during nine out of ten sleepovers, inserting his fingers into her vagina.
This woman also recounted an incident where Langdon took her into his bedroom and forcibly engaged in sexual acts, which caused her significant pain until his wife intervened after hearing raised voices.
Another victim detailed being driven to a rural area where she was coerced into masturbating Langdon.
A different woman recounted waking up at age seven to find Langdon attempting to perform oral sex on her.
Each victim provided impact statements, with four explaining that the abuse led to suicide attempts or self-harm.
One victim expressed that Langdon’s actions completely destroyed her childhood, causing her to question “Why me?” and blame herself.
Another described the devastating effect on her family life, her feelings of danger, and difficulty trusting others.
A third victim shared that she was conditioned to fear from a young age and was devastated to learn there were more victims.
Another woman explained that her childhood was stolen, resulting in loss of friendships, marital issues, and triggers for flashbacks and panic attacks.
A fifth victim, speaking via video link, discussed developing disorders and PTSD, stating that the abuse continues to influence her daily life.
Langdon has a criminal record with six prior convictions, including drink-driving and theft, and his marriage has ended.
He is now viewed as an outcast within the community.
Diarmuid Connolly BL, stated that Langdon is deeply remorseful and aware of the damage caused.
The court also heard that Langdon suffers from arthritis.
Initially, the judge proposed a maximum sentence of 16 years but ultimately reduced it to 12 and a half years, with one year suspended.
The sentence was made retrospective to October 29 of the previous year, when Langdon was taken into custody.
