DAVID HUNTER FROM TEMPLEPARTICK FACES CHILD PORN CHARGES IN BELFAST COURT
In August 2003, a serious case involving a County Antrim accountant named David Hunter, aged 40, from Kings Court, Templepatrick, was brought before Belfast Magistrates Court. Hunter was found to have downloaded and possessed indecent photographs of children from the internet, a revelation that has sparked concern and condemnation.Police investigations commenced in July 2001 after a colleague within Hunter's accountancy partnership in Ballyclare noticed inappropriate images displayed on his computer screen. This discovery prompted a search and seizure of Hunter's electronic devices, including his computer and laptop. An examination of these devices revealed a disturbing collection of 128 images depicting children, along with 11 images that involved sexually explicit content.
During the court proceedings, Hunter admitted to the charges, and his defense solicitor explained that his actions occurred during a period of significant stress within his professional and personal life. The solicitor emphasized that Hunter had 'strayed into areas he should not have' and expressed remorse for his actions. He also highlighted the emotional toll on Hunter, stating that the matter had been weighing heavily on him for two years, and he experienced daily dread over the impact of his conduct on his family.
The solicitor further described Hunter's family as 'loving,' emphasizing that despite the serious nature of the charges, his family remained together and supportive. The court was told that Hunter's actions had caused distress, but his family continued to care for one another.
Resident Magistrate Desmond Perry addressed Hunter directly, questioning why a man in his position would indulge in what he described as 'a perversion.' He issued a warning that any future offenses would likely result in a custodial sentence, underscoring the seriousness of the crime and the court's stance on such conduct. As part of his sentence, Hunter was given a conditional discharge and fined £250. Additionally, he was ordered to be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of five years, reflecting the ongoing concern about his behavior and the potential risk to the community.
