DAVID HALLETT FROM FLEUR-DE-LYS CAERPHILLY CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTED RAPE OF SCHOOLGIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, David Hallett, aged 46, a resident of Fleur-de-Lys in Caerphilly, was found guilty of multiple serious charges involving a 13-year-old schoolgirl. The incident unfolded during a week-long trial at Cardiff Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of Hallett’s attempted sexual assault on the young girl.According to court proceedings, the victim recounted how Hallett had shown her pornography and then attempted to engage in sexual intercourse with her. During her testimony, she revealed that Hallett had told her, "it’s our little secret," and warned her not to tell anyone, saying, "don’t tell anyone or we’ll both get into trouble." The girl’s account was supported by evidence and was so compelling that the jury convicted Hallett on seven charges related to the incident.
However, what was not initially disclosed to the jury was Hallett’s criminal history. It was only after the forewoman of the jury had taken her seat that Judge Stephen Hopkins QC disclosed that Hallett had a prior conviction from 1999 for a serious sexual offence. The judge explained, "In 1999, at this very court, he was found guilty of breaking into a house and raping a sleeping woman. He was sentenced to four years in prison, which was subsequently increased to six years on appeal."
Hallett was released from prison in 2003 and subsequently moved to live with his sister. The judge emphasized the danger Hallett posed, stating, "In my view, he is a dangerous sexual offender, and I am considering imposing a sentence for public protection." Such a sentence would keep Hallett incarcerated until it is deemed safe to release him, pending an outside report confirming his dangerousness.
During the trial, the court also heard that police were called after the girl confided in a teacher about the abuse. Hallett consistently denied the allegations, repeatedly answering "No" or "No I did not" when questioned about the details of the accusations.
Judge Hopkins addressed Hallett directly, stating, "What you did to her was unspeakable. The effect on her was evident as she gave her evidence." The court found Hallett guilty of attempted rape and sexual activity with a child, recognizing the severity of his actions and the impact on the young victim. Hallett, who had been residing at addresses on High Street and Commercial Street in Fleur-de-Lys, Caerphilly, now faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence as justice is served for the young girl and the community at large.
