DAVID EDWARDS FROM GREAT WITLEY SENTENCED FOR GROOMING GIRLS ON THE INTERNET NEAR WORCESTER
In a case that has shocked the local community near Worcester, David Edwards, a 23-year-old resident of Stourport Road, Great Witley, was found guilty of a series of serious offences involving the grooming and exploitation of young girls over the internet. The proceedings took place at Worcester Crown Court, where Edwards faced multiple charges related to his disturbing online activities.According to the prosecution, Edwards used the alias 'Harry Potter' to target vulnerable girls aged between 13 and 15 over a period spanning from 2009 to 2012. The victims, whose identities remain protected, were subjected to manipulative and coercive tactics as Edwards sought to persuade them to engage in indecent acts. The court heard that his initial approach appeared friendly, but as their online interactions progressed, the tone became increasingly sexualized, especially during webcam sessions.
During these encounters, Edwards convinced the girls to send nude and intimate photographs of themselves. He also issued threats, warning that he would distribute these images to others if they refused to comply with his demands. Such intimidation tactics caused significant distress to the victims and their families, who later discovered the extent of Edwards' manipulations.
Prosecutor Michael Conry highlighted that Edwards had a prior conviction for possessing indecent images before he began his online grooming activities. This history underscored the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing risk he posed to young people.
In his defense, Stephen Parker, representing Edwards, explained that his client had a troubled upbringing. Edwards lost his mother in a tragic road accident when he was just one year old. Subsequently, he spent years in children’s homes and foster care, which contributed to difficulties in forming healthy relationships and communicating effectively with others. Parker also revealed that Edwards had been sexually abused himself and was a victim of rape on one occasion. The defense argued that these traumatic experiences had a profound impact on his behavior, especially following the suicide of a close friend at the age of 18.
Judge Richard Rundell delivered a stern judgment, condemning Edwards for his role in corrupting young girls through the use of webcams and online manipulation. The judge described the case as particularly distressing for the victims and their families, emphasizing the gravity of Edwards’ actions. As part of his sentence, Edwards was handed a four-year prison term after pleading guilty to 13 charges, including incitement to engage in sexual activity and causing minors to watch sexual acts. Additionally, the court imposed a sexual offences prevention order and mandated that Edwards register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from further harm.
