DAVID DYE'S CRUELTY IN CHARLESTON: DOG NEGLECT LEADS TO FATAL ATTACK IN DUNDEE
David Dye, born on August 30, 1990, and residing on Dunholm Road in Charleston, Dundee, has been found guilty of neglecting his pet dogs, an act that culminated in a tragic and fatal attack. The incident unfolded in a deplorable living environment, where the conditions of the flat were described as squalid and bloodstained, reflecting a disturbing level of neglect.According to reports, the elderly Shih-Tzu named Harley was discovered dead in the flat, having been savagely attacked by Stella, a young bull terrier also owned by Dye. The attack was so severe that Harley sustained multiple puncture wounds, leading to its death. The circumstances surrounding the incident revealed that both dogs had been left to suffer in a neglected state, with no food or water available for them, and the flat emitting a strong smell of urine, indicating they had been confined in these conditions for an extended period.
During a court hearing at Dundee Sheriff Court, fiscal depute Gavin Burton detailed the scene: police officers responded to concerns raised about the welfare of children in the property. Upon arrival, they heard a dog barking but found no one present inside. Inside, they observed Stella, the bull terrier, alive but visibly scared of males, with overgrown nails and a dirty, matted coat. The deceased Harley was found lying on the floor, bloodstained and lifeless. The flat was in a state of disrepair, with bloodstains and a pervasive smell of urine, further evidence of prolonged neglect.
Authorities confirmed that Stella was removed from the property under a deprivation order and rehomed. Investigations revealed that Dye had failed to provide a suitable environment for his dogs, neglecting their basic needs and failing to keep them separated properly. He admitted to the court that he neglected to protect Harley from injury, which directly resulted in the dog's death. Additionally, Dye confessed to breaking into his mother’s house on May 4, 2022, and stealing a smartwatch and a games console.
In sentencing, the court imposed a series of penalties on Dye, including 180 hours of unpaid work, an 18-month supervision order, and a two-year disqualification from owning a dog. The case highlights the serious consequences of animal neglect and the importance of proper care and supervision for pets in the community of Charleston and Dundee.
