DAVID BLAND FROM HOUGHTON CONQUEST JAILED FOR CHILD SEX IMAGE OFFENSES IN BEDFORDSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the local community of Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire, David Bland, aged 49, has been sentenced to a 12-month prison term after being found guilty of possessing a vast collection of child sexual abuse images. The conviction follows a detailed investigation that uncovered the extent of his illegal activities involving indecent images of children.Authorities acted on intelligence that led to a raid on Bland’s residence in Almers Close, Houghton Conquest, in February 2008. The police operation was initiated after officers from the Metropolitan Police in London traced his credit card activity, which revealed access to illegal websites hosting such disturbing content. During the search of his home, law enforcement officials discovered a significant number of illicit images stored on his computer and copies on CDs and DVDs, which were subsequently presented as evidence in court.
Prosecutor Natalie Carter outlined the disturbing details of the case during the hearing at Luton Crown Court. She explained that Bland had downloaded these images on 20 separate occasions spanning from March 2006 to early 2008. The collection included a total of 15,432 still images classified at Level One, the lowest level of severity, along with smaller quantities at higher levels of explicitness—132 images at Level Two, 292 at Level Three, 388 at Level Four, and six at Level Five. Notably, some images at Level One and Level Two had been deleted, indicating an attempt to conceal parts of his collection.
In addition to the still images, authorities found a total of 58 movies at Level One, 22 at Level Two, 17 at Level Three, 122 at Level Four, and nine at Level Five. One of the Level One movies had been removed prior to the police investigation. During his interview with officers, Bland claimed to be a naturist, asserting that viewing the images was akin to being on a naturist beach where children are seen naked. He insisted that he had no sexual interest in children and described his viewing of the images as “pure naturism,” a statement that was met with condemnation by the court.
Prior to sentencing, Bland pleaded guilty to 22 charges of making indecent photographs of children and one charge of possession. His defense lawyer, Anna Faul, requested leniency, highlighting Bland’s early guilty plea and the fact that most of the images were at Level One. She also mentioned that Bland had been suffering from depression and feelings of extreme loneliness but was receiving support from his family.
However, Judge Richard Foster delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes. He stated, “What you have to realize is that the victims are real children who have been forced to go through torture and suffering. The children have suffered terrible experiences for the perverted sexual gratification of the likes of you.”
In addition to the prison sentence, the judge imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits Bland from having unsupervised contact with children, working with children, or possessing any photographs of individuals under 16. The order also mandates that he allows police access to his computer at any time. Furthermore, Bland is permanently banned from working with children and is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. The court ordered the destruction of all computer equipment and discs related to the case, underscoring the seriousness of the offense and the ongoing efforts to prevent further harm.
