DAVID BAXTER FROM LISNARICK SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AT ERNE INTEGRATED COLLEGE

David Baxter, a 65-year-old former educator at Erne Integrated College, has been handed a sentence of four and a half months in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting a student during his tenure at the school. The incident involved grooming and sexual abuse directed at a vulnerable child, with the assault taking place in a storeroom within the school premises. Baxter’s position of trust as a teacher was exploited in the commission of this crime, highlighting the severity of the breach of professional and moral boundaries.

During the court proceedings held at Enniskillen Magistrates' Court, District Judge Alana McSorley addressed the court, noting Baxter’s apparent denial of any wrongdoing. The judge pointed out that Baxter showed no remorse for his actions, which compounded the seriousness of the case. The judge also underscored the aggravating circumstances, including the fact that the victim was compelled to leave her school environment as a result of the abuse, and that her life has been significantly impacted by the trauma inflicted upon her.

In a further aggravating factor, Baxter’s own perception of himself as a victim was highlighted by the judge, which was seen as an additional indication of his lack of accountability. The court’s decision also included a seven-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, along with notification requirements that Baxter must adhere to, and a disqualification from working with children in any capacity. These measures aim to prevent any future harm and protect other potential victims from similar abuse.
